I'm so glad I came across this post. I'm a fiction author who has thought about going wide quite a few times, but never felt sure enough or confident enough to try. I'm going to read the first two posts to get the full picture. Thank you for your well-considered and practical advice.

So far, I'm happy with it. I like the fact that it gives me alternatives, and I love the universal link for each of my books. ☺️

I’m in the process is self publishing and found this really helpful. Have you gone wide? Has it worked? Maybe this is an DM question but have you made a living off your self pub income?

I am just starting to move my books over there so no I haven’t figured that part out yet. I do know that many of the authors who are more successful have used it or publish drive. I don’t like publish drive because it costs a monthly fee. My books are just starting to pick up an income - regularly…but I feel like focusing on a series would be more profitable.

What kinds of books do you write? If you are in the non-fiction space then creating an author business might be a more profitable angle. It takes time to build up an audience so I’m nowhere near making a full time income from my books but I’m working towards at least making something to contribute. I also sell digital products, courses, and use affiliate links which all add up!

Hi Michelle. Again, thank you for this information. I’m trying to finish my current manuscript in the next few months. I think I’ll pursue an indie path through digital publishing. I don’t have anything ready just yet, but I’m looking at a possible hybrid approach with KDP and D2D combined. I’d love to hear back from you, and I appreciate your time.

Hi John! Yes, that's a great approach and something I'm trying myself. It's so great that you are thinking through this ahead of time. I'd also suggest building up your genuine connections through Substack or your email list before you even write your book. This is just so helpful when it comes time to promote your book. Even if you have a small audience, they are so helpful with things like beta reading and ARCs. Also, you can look into doing free promotions to save money. Of course, that's more down the road when the book is ready. Just something to think about!

How can you tell whether you are on KDP Select or not? What is the alternative to Select?

thanks

If you have a book listed on Amazon, scroll over to the right of where your book is showing and click on the three dots. Then click on KDP Select (or something like that - can’t recall the exact wording). It will show if you are enrolled and until how long. The alternative to select is not being enrolled and so your royalties are less. If you use draft2digital you can list it in more places and possibly earn more too. I’m putting a new post out on this on Wednesday.
